Tanzania Internet Exchange Upgrades Core to 100G

TIX averaged about 205 Gbps in late September 2026, up from roughly 110 Gbps a year earlier, on the exchange’s own statistics.

Data flowing through the Tanzania Internet eXchange (TIX) grew overall by over 80% during the past year, averaging 205 Gbps during the final week of September 2026, compared with about 110 Gbps a year prior.

The Tanzania Internet Service Providers Association (TISPA), which operates the exchange, announced on 23 September 2026 that it had upgraded TIX’s core switch capacity to 100G to manage growing traffic and the connectivity demands of connected networks. TISPA did not disclose the prior capacity.

“With greater core capacity, networks can exchange local traffic more efficiently through the IXP, helping improve network performance and supporting a more resilient Internet ecosystem,” TISPA stated.

An internet exchange point (IXP) is where networks connect directly to hand traffic to each other, preventing data from leaving and re-entering the country. TIX is located in Dar es Salaam, with 67 members across its exchanges, according to TISPA’s portal.

Most growth occurred since mid-year. From July to September 2026, monthly averages surpassed the previous month, reaching 205 Gbps in September. The portal also covers five smaller TISPA exchanges in Arusha, Dodoma, Mwanza, Zanzibar, and Mbeya, allowing local traffic exchange without routing to Dar es Salaam.

The upgrade aligns with similar moves across Africa. Accra-IX in Ghana upgraded to 400G on 1 September 2026, while IXPN in Lagos adopted 400G peering at three sites in July 2026 after doubling peak traffic to over 2 Tbps.

A correction noted on 29 September 2026 clarified that TIX in Dar es Salaam connects 67 networks across all TISPA exchanges, not 66 as initially reported.
