WindBorne Secures $37 Million to Expand Balloon‑Based Forecasting

WindBorne Systems announced a $37 million Series B financing round, valuing the company at $250 million after the investment. The round was co‑led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital and existing backers.

Founded in 2019, the firm operates a network of roughly 600 high‑altitude balloons launched from 20 sites worldwide.

The balloons carry low‑cost sensors that collect atmospheric data in places that are hard to reach, including the eye of a typhoon. WindBorne is now adding aerial sensor packages that can drop into the ocean and continue gathering measurements as floating buoys.

CEO John Dean told reporters that the new funding will support the rollout of a mesh radio network to replace satellite links, expand the go‑to‑market team, and cover compute costs for the company’s forecasting model.

AI‑Enhanced Forecasts Attract Government Customers

The primary clients are government agencies. The U.S. National Weather Service purchases WindBorne’s data, while the U.S. Air Force and Navy collaborate on research projects that aim to run forecasting models on ships with intermittent connectivity.

Dean said, “We demonstrated that when you add balloons to the forecast, you get more accurate forecasts, and the value per data point is much stronger than satellites.” The claim rests on the company’s proprietary dataset, which he describes as a “planetary nervous system.” That dataset feeds into a model that also incorporates public data from agencies such as NOAA.

Revenue from these contracts has grown, providing a de‑risked demand signal to VCs. The funding round is therefore positioned as a bridge from government‑focused work to broader commercial applications.

WindBorne’s next target market includes investment funds that use weather data to forecast commodity prices and other business outcomes. The firm believes that recent advances in large‑language‑model‑based deep learning have lowered the cost barrier for turning raw atmospheric measurements into actionable forecasts.

Saloni Multani, a partner at Galvanize, noted that integrating weather forecasts into broader business decision‑making has traditionally been costly and complex. “We think AI changes that equation,” she said. “Better forecasts make the effort worthwhile, and AI makes it much easier to connect those forecasts to the decisions businesses are trying to make.”

Many private weather firms have relied on repackaging government forecasts for media outlets, aviation de‑icing, or ship routing. The emergence of AI tools that can process large datasets more efficiently could shift that balance toward proprietary models.

Compared with earlier attempts at commercializing earth‑observing data, WindBorne’s approach benefits from a unique data source that is harder for competitors to replicate. The balloons can linger in regions where satellites have limited resolution, offering a niche that could translate into higher‑margin services.

The upcoming months will test whether the firm can translate its technical edge into a sustainable private‑sector revenue stream.

Its ability to sell directly to businesses will be a key indicator of long‑term viability.
